5 years from now…
A few months ago, I happened to catch up with one of my friends about many things. One of the things that intrigued me was her interview answers. For sure as a career coach, I am bound to ask questions about one’s career.
Do you recognize the question below? Have you been asked a similar question? If yes, what did you answer? If not yet, what would you answer? It is important to prepare for an interview very well. One has a short time to leave a positive mark in the minds and hearts of the interviewers.
Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?
My friend’s answer to this question was;
‘I do not know where I will be 5 years from now, but I know what I will have done in this role in 5 years’ time. Here is what I will have delivered …’
She begun to list what she knew she would be able to deliver. This of course demonstrated she had understood the expectations of the new role were.
Wow, I thought that was a good answer.
When I asked her why she gave this answer, she told me, ‘I am in a new role, hardly finished a couple of months. I honestly haven’t thought about what role I want next. For sure I didn’t want to say I want my boss’s job, because that wouldn’t be true either. In any case I am yet to deliver in my new role.
I liked the answer she gave in her situation because it felt genuine. I could smell authenticity and confidence in her. Personality traits, I suspect would interest any good potential employer. What would your answer be?
